The permeability algorithm determines the permeability of the unit cell structure generated using the engineering operations or modelled by the simplex. The permeability can be determined using liquids or gases, that are available in the materials database.

In the tutorial we are going to calculate the permeability of the Calcium carbonate paper coating to Oxygen. The next figure displays the permeability screen, which shows a list of all of the liquids and gases in the materials database. The permeability algorithm for a 10 x 10 x 10 structure should take less than a minute to complete.

The results of the permeability calculation are given in milliDarcies on the home page. The permeability calculation should give a value of 0.012 mD for the cubic unit cell and 0.0159 mD for the cuboidal unit cell. The shape of the unit cell influences the permeability and larger unit cells provide more realistic values of permeability.

In conjunction with the engineering operations built into PoreXpert Professional the permeability tool becomes a highly useful parameter to characterise new structures created from an experimental data file, which allows users to understand the movement of gases or liquids through the unit cell.

If you export the permeability results as a CSV file the permeability is automatically converted to SI units and listed in the spreadsheet report.
